Day 20 - 14.08.15 - Angkor Wat

Sophie and I got up at 04:15 to get a Tuk Tuk to Angkor Wat where we were going to watch the sunrise. Angkor Wat is the largest temple complex in the world at over 400km2!! Our tuk tuk driver was called Vibol, and he agreed to take us around the temple complex. The sunrise was stunning, we watched it for about an hour and a half whilst sitting in a small pagoda opposite. The colours were beautiful.
After the sun rose, we went for breakfast at a store called Harry Potter. We had chocolate banana pancakes and a coffee. We tried to pay with a $20 note, which had the smallest tear in it, but it was a struggle to make them take it. Apparently the banks don't buy any money that has a defect so locals won't lie you pay with it. However, it was the only money we had on us, as we each had to pay $20 entry, so she reluctantly took it.
After breakfast, we went to explore Angkor Wat.

As we exited Angkor Wat, Vibol came careering over in his Tuk Tuk to pick us up and take us to the next temple - Pasat Bayon. This was a very interesting temple  which had stone faces carved into its walls. The faces are said to be the four smiles of one of the Kings of Cambodia - happy, sad, charming and beautiful.
Sophie nearly left her bum bag on top of a tower that we climbed!!
After wandering around for a while to find Vibol, we made our way to a 3rd temple called Ta Keo. This temple was less impressive than the other two that as it was less ornate. We decided that this was probably because we were comparing it to the other two temples and perhaps on its own it would be impressive.
We only stayed for a little while, as it was hot and we wants to go to the next temple, Ta Phrom. This temple was the temple used to film Tomb Raider. It was in ruins and had been inhabited by gigantic trees. It had a feel about it which was nature reclaiming the temple.
Vibol then drove us back to the hostel. We decide to tip him, as he was so nice and helpful! Unfortunately we did not get a picture with him which made us sad. We have been relaxing at the hostel since as me and Sophie are very tired. We went in the pool which was lovely and adventure to the Angkor Night Market for dinner.
The menu had some very interesting dishes. And I found out what bat cave fruit is by ordering a glass of Papaya juice. Liquidised bat cave in a glass.
Also, i have managed to bruise my nose from having our massage.

  1. You could re-enact the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark at that temple. It's a good idea, you just need someone to get the ball rolling.....

  2. Hi, how is your nose? I was getting worried you hadn't complained about an ailment for a couple of weeks. The temples looked beautiful. Did you sing the Indianna Jones theme tune? I bet you did. X
